Frequently Asked Questions
“Red light therapy” refers to treatments from LEDs that deliver wavelengths of natural red and near infrared light. Red light therapy does not rely on heat, a major difference between natural light treatments and heat-based modalities like an infrared sauna, traditional sauna, or other type of heat therapy. Red light therapy describes natural light treatments that deliver the same therapeutic red and near infrared wavelengths as natural sunlight. This differs from artificial light treatments like tanning or bright light therapy from a light therapy lamp, light box, or happylight. Red light therapy may also be referred to as the following terms: RLT, photobiomodulation (PBM), phototherapy, LED therapy, LED light therapy, low-level laser therapy or low level light therapy (LLLT).
Red light therapy has become a popular natural health intervention, both in professional and clinical settings and with home devices like Orion. Light therapy technology has been used in medicine for decades, and NASA experimented with red light therapy in the 1980s and 1990s. In the last decade, red light therapy has become more widely used thanks to breakthroughs in LED lighting technology that have made affordable home devices possible. Major advances in clinical light therapy research and increased public interest in natural health technologies, have also contributed to the growing use and popularity of red light therapy.
Red light therapy has been rigorously studied and tested for decades, from NASA to the leading medical research institutions in the world. In 2013, several of the world’s leading dermatologists and clinical researchers from Harvard Medical School and MIT published a peer-reviewed meta-analysis noting red light therapy’s “non-invasive nature and almost complete absence of side effects.” Orion uses only the red and near infrared wavelengths that are clinically-proven to be safe and effective. However, we always recommend consulting with your healthcare provider for specific questions about your health condition(s).
It varies by person and how consistent you are with treatments. Many users report acute energy and cognitive benefits with each use. Many see benefits like reduced inflammation and muscle soreness in a matter of days, or weeks. More full-body health benefits like skin health, fat loss, and other long-term improvements may take 2-3 months of consistent daily use.
More doesn’t always mean better! Treatments longer than 15 minutes won’t necessarily lead to greater benefits because your cells can only absorb so much light. The great thing about Orion is that you can obtain the same benefits in less time versus other products on the market. 10-15 minutes per day is all you need.
Red and near-infrared (NIR) light are both in the natural light spectrum and have been clinically proven to enhance cellular function. The main differences are that red light at 660nm is readily absorbed by skin tissue, leading to improved skin health and collagen production. Near-infrared light at 850nm is invisible to the human eye and penetrates into deeper tissue, leading to benefits like increased muscle recovery and reduced joint pain.
Beam angle is a measurement of how light is distributed from a light source. Some LED light manufacturers use a wide beam angle of 90 degrees, which causes the power density to reduce over distance, compared to a narrower beam angle of 60 degrees. If you are planning to use red light therapy to target a larger area of your body by positioning yourself further away, a narrower beam angle is highly recommended. Orion uses an optimal narrow beam angle of 60 degrees to ensure therapeutic power density at further distances.
Orion devices are engineered to have low EMF levels. However, anything with an electric current running through it is going to generate some electromagnetic field. At the recommended usage distance of 6-12 inches, our devices emit no detectable levels of EMF.
Protective eyewear is included with each device and is recommended to be worn at all times. Do not stare directly into the light without protective eyewear. We recommend that you consult with your healthcare provider if you have any eye conditions.
Yes, LEDs make a big difference! LEDs are the most effective technology for controlling the wavelength and direction of light therapy. They also allow for the delivery of high-intensity output with minimal heat. They are by far the most efficient source for red light therapy and Orion only uses industry leading 5w LEDs for optimal results.
Unlike red light, near infrared light is invisible to the naked eye. Orion uses red (660 nm), near infrared (850 nm) or you can use both LEDs at the same time. If the red light LEDs are working, the near infrared LEDs should be as well. To test this on your device, turn only the NIR switch on. You should see a very faint illumination of the NIR LEDs.
We do not offer an app or timer because we rather provide the most powerful red light therapy products at the lowest price possible. The addition of an app and timer does not improve performance or deliver greater results. Other companies offer these features in order to increase their retail price.
Orion is a natural, non-invasive, and chemical & drug-free therapy. However, out of caution, we recommend you consult with your healthcare provider if you take photosensitizing drugs like Tetracycline, Digoxin, Retin A, and others.
It’s not uncommon for people to use red light therapy after bathing. In that case, we recommend that you dry yourself after bathing or swimming before starting a treatment. Avoid using your Orion in an area with excess water or with wet hands.
Red light therapy has been clinically-proven to help damaged skin heal from burns, cuts, scars, and other blemishes.
Red light therapy is safe to use during pregnancy. Red light therapy has been shown to increases blood circulation in the body and can prevent hair loss. Studies have found that red light therapy accelerates wound healing and reduces scarring on the body during the postpartum period. Consult with your healthcare provider for further questions about using red light therapy during pregnancy.
Those who have recently undergone LASIK eye surgery may experience more light sensitivity, so we recommend using the protective eyewear that come along with your device while your eyes recover. Consult with your healthcare provider for further questions about LASIK or other eye procedures, and how they may be affected by red light therapy.
Botox and other chemical fillers shouldn’t be affected. However, Orion red light therapy usage is designed to increase your skin's natural collagen production, so you may find you no longer need Botox injections. Consult with your healthcare provider if you have additional questions about how skin treatments or cosmetic procedures interact with red light therapy.
